36 Days of TYpe 2018

Personal Project all Art Direction and Content Created by JonJonMakeMake

36 Days of Type is a yearly project on Instagram that invited Designers, Illustrators and Graphic Artists to express their particular views on letters and numbers of the alphabet. As the name suggests, participants are challenged to create a letter or number each day for 36 days straight.

People approach the task in different ways with some choosing to develop their own custom typeface and others choosing to stick to a distinct style to create their letterforms. There had been a tonne of things I wanted to test or practice so I chose to go a different way and treat each letter as a different exploration into sculpting, texturing and lighting techniques. On this project I also wanted to create assets that would build up my personal content library and be re-used in later projects. Assets included sets of rocks, wood, modular pipes and chains plus crystal, rock, tile and ice shaders.

The project taught me to make decisions quicker and also to know when to cut my loses and change direction. Some of the quickest ideas turned out to be the best as they were the most simple, which in turn meant that they had a stronger first read. Special thanks to 36daysoftype for putting on such a great challenge and for featuring one of my letters.

The tools I used for the project were Zbrush and Substance Painter as well as Lighting and Rendering in Maya with Redshift Renderer.
