Viktor Titov - Dwarf Bust
2d to 3D concept Adaptation
Rendered and Textured In the style of Maria Panfilova
I have loved Viktor Titov’s illustration for some time now and recently I got the time to sculpt one of my favourites of his. In the future I want to tackle a few more of his more complex character designs however to start off with I thought I would have a crack at this dwarf design. When deciding how to approach this sculpt I was reminded of Maria Panfilova’s adaptation of one of Viktor’s Sea Creatures https://www.artstation.com/artwork/wXoLL. Although there have been many wonderful adaptations of Viktor’s work I think Maria’s might be the best. Her mastery of colour and anatomy pay such great tribute to Viktor’s design and I wanted to try and emulate that as much as possible. To do this I wanted to learn how Maria sculpts and textures her models so I did a bunch of research, watched some of her lectures, speed sculpts and eventually bought her tutorial ‘Artistic Animal CG Sculpture Tutorial’ on Artstation and learnt as much as I could about her process. After studying this tutorial I went about creating this Viktor Titrov design in the style of Maria Panfilova. I learnt a lot about colour theory, lighting and even got some of Maria’s custom brushes which helped so much to create the look I was aiming for.
My ambition for this project was to adapt the 2D concept to 3D as best I could and then to develop a textured version of this sculpt that would look like a real wooden sculpted statue. I wanted the colours to look aged and worn whilst sitting in an artistically stylised tone. I’m very happy with the result however I have had a few requests to see what it would look like with more realistic texturing so I am going to have a go at more of a Blizzard style textured version soon as well. So stay tuned :)
Below are a number are colour and lighting variations for the model as I had some time to experiment and see what would work. Also you will find a clay render and a BW value comparison with the original concept too.
I can’t thank Maria enough for all the lessons I learnt along the way and thank you to Viktor for the wonderful concept art. I continue to get so much inspiration from you both.
